what is gematria?

Gematria is an ancient Jewish system of numerology, which assigns numerical values to the Hebrew alphabet and thereby assigns numerical value to words. This system is used in rabbinical interpretation of the Hebrew Bible, it is also used for Kabalistic mysticism. It has been a major factor influencing mystical name interpretation for centuries.

The word "Gematria" comes from the Greek, "geometria," which means measuring the earth or geometry and it is believed to have originated in Babylonian-Assyrian cultures. Gematria has been studied and discussed as early as 500 BCE with evidence that it was already being practiced in Babylonia before then.

In Gematria, each Hebrew letter corresponds to a specific number beginning with aleph = 1, bet = 2, gimel = 3 and so on up to taf = 22. Numbers can then be calculated based on these letter values and certain numerical patterns become apparent with certain words or phrases. For example, Jesus' name written in Hebrew (יהוה) totals 26, which is believed by some to represent the word 'YHWH' for God or Yahweh. Therefore 26 has become a very significant number associated with Jesus Christ throughout Christianity and other spiritual paths.

When using this system for mystical purposes, people will study correlations between letters or words of significance (i.e., Bible verses) in order to draw spiritual conclusions from their findings. Since gematria is greatly influenced by biblical texts, many believe that possessing knowledge of gematria means tapping into the divine language that God speaks through in His scriptures. Consequently it helps us uncover simple linguistic connections that would normally be invisible upon simple inspection or reading of scripture; providing us with insight into self knowledge an awareness of our relationship with Creation around us
